3-4 Days near Florence

We're traveling to the Florence, Italy area in August. We'll be staying with friends in Tuscany for a part of the time. We've explored Florence on a past trip, so would like suggestions on places to go for 3-4 days. We're traveling with a teenage boy. We're not bed and breakfast people. Nicer hotels or home rentals would be ideal. Perhaps something on the East Coast?

Have you been to Venice? A 3-4 day trip to Venice would be perfect. If you want something with less tourists, then I would go over to Ravenna or stay in the La Marche area of Italy in the capital of Ancona.

The Italian lowlands, especially the cities, can be pretty brutal in August. Since the coastal holiday spots are probably already booked solid by vacationing Italians, you might want to check out the lake district (Como, Garda, etc.) or the highlands/mountains. Act fast because August is "holiday" time for many Italians.

Thanks for these great ideas. We went to Venice and Rome a few years ago. Since I have a teenager with me, I need to find a spot that has some active things to do, although a day at the beach would be fine. We want to stay within 1-2 hours of Florence. As I said, we're spending a few days later in Tuscany, so I want to save that area for later in our journey.
