2x1 Speciale Train Tickets

I am looking to travel between Bologna and Venice for a day trip in late November. I noticed the 2x1 special for train tickets on the frecce trains - is this specific discount available to everyone (even non-residents) or are there any restrictions? Also, should I not book a return ticket and wait until I am there for time flexibility?

I believe it is only on Saturdays, and must be purchased at least two days before (subject to availability). So you need to buy the return in advance as well. Look if Super Economy Tickets are cheaper. The 2 for 1 is off the base fare, and Super Economy can be more than 50% off.

If you want flexibility, look at using Regionale Veloce trains. Price is always the same, low, and between Bologna and Venice they are only a little slower than Freccia trains because they make more stops. They never sell out. Buy a ticket and get on board.

Edit - I am looking at Saturday Nov 24. The first Freccia of the day at 9:08 has no 2 for 1 in 2nd class, only 1st class, so that is 46 EUR for 2. The train takes 1 hour and 27 minutes to get to Venezia Santa Lucia, arriving at 10:35. However, there is a Regionale Veloce at 8:20 costing 25.20 EUR for 2. It takes 1 hour and 58 minutes to get to Venezia, arriving at 10:18, before the Freccia train. There are also trains at 7:20 and 6:20 and you can buy tickets at the station just before you go, at the ticket window, from a ticket machine, or from the Trenitlia App on your smart phone. Last train back is at 19:42.
