We are beginning to talk of our second trip to Italy.. The 1st time we flew in and out of Milan, took the train to Florence. Took day trips to to Siena, Lake Como, and Bergamo. This time i'm thinking of flying into Venice for a couple of nights, taking the train to some other interesting Northern or Tuscan town, then I absolutely must go to the Cinque Terra.. Everyone was so incredibly helpful in helping to make our first trip a success, this was the first place I thought of to seek help.
Maybe Lucca or Volterra?
Or Verona.
near milan, perfect for a day trip:
bergamo, brescia, cremona, varese
Verona, Bologna are both great towns in Northern Italy.
Hallo, I think you should not miss the tuscan small hilltopstowns in the countryside, such as Cortona, Montepulciano, Pienza, San Gimignano, Volterra.
Verona then Lucca. Both right on your way to Cinque Terre (assuming you go via Florence). You would change trains in Florence but since you have been there, you don't need to leave the train station.
Both Verona and Lucca have lots of charm, but they are very different so not redundant. If there during summer you can see an opera in the Roman arena in Verona.
If you are staying in Venice, do a long day trip to Ravenna-- we even know a couple who spent a couple nights there.
Thank you so much, for all your replies.. Now I have a real good base to work from... By the way, It's a 6oo$ difference to fly open jaw into Venice and out of Milano, rather than in and out of Milan.. That kind of blew me away! With only 8 nights on the ground, my time is precious. i should say, for 2 tickets.
