Does anyone know if there is a problem with keeping your luggage with you while travelling 2nd class? Or does your luggage end up in a separate section?
Dependsif they are roll-aboards, they can go overhead-if not, at the end of the car. We just went from Parma to Naples 2nd class with no problems or worries.
Large bags must be stored at the end of each carriage. Small bags can fit on the overhead shelf. Some medium sized bags can fit between the seats. Be sure to pack lightly as the steps on and off the train are very steep and there is no one to help you. Donna
Your luggage ends up where you put it. That's usually wherever you can get it to fit.
Sarah, It's an especially good idea to keep your luggage nearby, or it may "disappear" unexpectedly. I've seen that happen, even in Germany and Switzerland (which are usually relatively "safe")! Rail cars typically have a luggage rack at one end of the car for larger items. Smaller pieces of luggage can be placed on the rack which is usually located above all seats. If the car isn't full, you can often put smaller items on the seat beside you. You may find it helpful to have a look at This Website which has all the information you'll ever need on travelling by train in Europe. Happy travels!
You can keep your luggage with you if you can get one of the single seats at the ends of the cars (there's adequate space next to the seat). I can never reach the overhead bin, but I can usually find someone to help if necessary. "Between the seats" I think refers to the space behind your seat and the next row (seats facing in opposite directions). Most major train stations have elevators, this will help avoid the stairs.
What is typically considered a large bag?
Anything beyond the average carry on size bag or backpack.
