My daughter and young family have lived in Milan for two years & will soon be driving to Rome for the first time. They will be staying in the Hotel Richmond, across the street from the Forum on Largo Corrado Ricci. No surprise, the hotel does not have parking for their car. Does anyone have a suggestion as to where to park and then get 2 parents, 3 young children, stroller, car seats, luggage, etc. to the hotel.
I seem to be the only pro-car in Italy person on this site, so I'll throw in my 2 cents. First, it looks like that hotel DOES provide parking. But, from what I can tell, it's a half mile away, costs 38 euros a day and requires an additional reservation.
For that kind of money, I'd likely park the car at a less expensive place and take a cab (or two) directly to the hotel. If the driver feels a bit gutsy, they could also drive into town, double park (just like a cab would have to do) to let everyone out at the hotel, then the driver can go alone to park the car and take public trans back to the hotel. I've done it, no big deal...but I went off alone to return the rental car, not to find parking.
Thanks for the replies, gentlemen. As I stated, they live & drive in Milan, are adapt at crazy traffic, use a GPS & are aware of the pitfalls of driving in Rome. Driving is not the problem, parking is.
Otter you say, "For that kind of money, I'd likely park the car at a less expensive place..."That is my question; where is the less expensive parking?
Hopefully someone who lives/lived in Rome can answer that.Anyone else want to offer a suggestion?
Grazie
This is a difficult question for us to answer, because we only have one regular replier, on this board, that lives in Rome. You may be able to find more locals at tripadvisors.com.The rest of us are only visitors to Rome and most of us don't try to drive into Rome or park overnight there, for reasons we're stating. You haven't really clarified whether they have yet tried asking the hotel to arrange for parking at a secure place used by the hotel? The hotel's website mentions a garage which is located at via Ostilia, 0.5 mile far from the hotel? And another booking website for the hotel indicates parking is available onsite? http://www.activehotels.com/1/1/14820-hotel-richmond-rome.html#descriptionHere's a website that offers lots of advice on parking in Italy, but they don't seem to address parking in Rome (I think I can guess why) Italy Slow Travel
If your daughter & family have been living in Milan for two years, it's possible that someone of their acquaintance there can be more helpful than we can. No doubt some in their circle are familiar with Rome and parking.
I received a private message with a very helpful site. In case someone else would like an answer to this question, here is a link to PARKING GARAGES IN ROME:

I appreciate all your help.
