Barcelona to Rome?

I've been checking out Rick's train map, and it looks like a long train ride from Barcelona to Rome. Has anyone been able to do it via night train or budget airline? Any tips & recommendations appreciated - thanks in advance!

You're right....it's a long and not very convenient journey. Clickair and Vueling, two Spanish discount airlines, make the Barcelona-Rome run...just add .com to their names for their websites. As with any discount airline, the sooner you book, the cheaper the fare.

There are also ferries to Rome from Barcelona. Routes vary. You can choose to go direct to Rome or stop in Marseille or go to Genova. Train is very long, ferry is about 30 hrs. If you are looking to do it budget way, plane is marginally cheaper. Seat choices on boat vary from deck to airplane-like seats inside to cabins.

Thanks everyone - I'm now thinking of simply flying from Lisbon to Rome. I'll be spending a lot of time in Spain anyway, so I can save Barcelona for another time...

We used Barcelona a couple years ago as terminus from our US flight. Then flew to Italy. I recommend flying over train for this leg. The train is long and overnight, with some car switching in the night. But, discount airlines tend to use the airport out of Barcelona that is an hour to the north of town. The main airlines, like Iberia or Alitalia, will use the main, convenient airports but are much more expensive. A lot hinges on convenience of getting to and from airport. BCN is a nice, small airport, with convenient shuttle bus to playa cataluna. It was easy to spend our 4 hour layover on las Ramblas.
