I have a few days beofre & after my cruise that departs near Rome. What other city near Rome is worth traveling to if I want to check out a difference but close place?

One possibility would be Orvieto (Umbria) which is not too far north of Rome. While in that area you could take a day trip to one of Rick's favourite hill towns, Civita di Bagnoregio.

I second the suggestion for Orvieto. Catch a train at Termini for Orvieto. It is an easy and fun day trip.

I agree with Ken about those two towns. If you want to do more research, look at a map and google for information about other nearby towns. Search by town name plus "sights" or "attractions."

Also worth a day trip from Rome is Ostia Antica, Rome's ancient seaport. Picture Pompeii without the crowds. About an hour away by train.
