24 hours in Rome

Am arriving to Rome via train (Termini Station) on Monday @ 1pm - Departing Tuesday @ 5pm back to Milan.
My son has his heart set on seeing the Colosseum. Suggestions: Arrive Rome and trying to decide where to take hotel (near Spanish Steps or ??) Will explore Monday as much as possible... Then Tuesday plan to go to Coliseum and from there return to Termini station. Would 3 hours suffice at Colosseum?

My son is almost 7 - so trying to plan logistically - lets face it in the hot heat; kids at their best are miserable.
Suggestions on best logistics to make 24 hours worthy. Love the Piazza's. the shops... would love to see Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, "the touristy things" TIA Cathy

Three hours is enough to see the Colosseum, but don't forget to all Time to see the Roman Forum. I also highly recommend going to the top of the Victor Emmanuel Monument for the best view of Rome. You also have a great view of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum from there. I think your son would love it.

Personally I would stay in the Termini area - Hotel Sonya is across from the Opera House and about three blocks from the Termini. Get off the train, walk to hotel, drop luggage, and they will hold your luggage the next day till you pick it up on the way to the Termini. Anything around the Spanish steps will require a taxi ride both ways. Just one more layer to deal with.

Goggle the New York Times, they have a travel feature called 36 Hours in ______. I am sure they have done Rome.

Thanks - thinking along those lines... Doing research - I think most practical as well.

Booking Kids Tour with good reviews and also thinking buying the pass for the double decker buses for 24 hours. You get driven around the city and they frequent the 8 stops on the bucket list. Again, this was a last add on for a 6 year old.... We will be hitting three weeks in France and Milan at this point, so not well thought out on my part for timing.... but rolling with it and making it happen!
