Has anybody brought their North American GPS (downloaded with Europe maps) to Italy? Did it work Okay or would you recommend getting a GPS through the car rental company?
We brought our Garmin 750 dowloaded with Italy maps to Italy and could never get it to work. I would recommend getting GPS with your rental car.
For our Italy trip last month, we borrowed our neighbor's Garmin 370 with Italy maps preloaded. (And we let our neighbor borrow our US-only GPS). I'm definitely glad that we had it. We used it primarily for driving through Tuscany with our rental car, but we also occasionally used it while walking around in the big cities.
You could try getting it through the car rental company, but they might not be able to guarantee availability.
Yes, actually it's best to bring your GPS from home because you already know how to use it! You can get one from Costco for $200, only online thru end of month, a Garmin that comes with European map in it. See the topic thread discussing it.
We rented one through AutoEurope and it was 10$ day. They mail it to you and you return it in 2 business days. It was great because it came a few days early and we practiced around town. It was very user friendly. We just did not want to buy one at this time and it worked out better for us to rent. Even though we needed it for 6 days, we had to pay for the 12 days of our trip. That was the down side. But it was uploaded with the most recent maps. It was a Garmin, or as we named it that trip, our "Garmini" Would rent from them for next trip if we don't have one by then.
