My husband's Canadian passport expires 26th of February. We are going to Italy for a month returning October 1. We just read that passage in Rick's book about being sure the passport is good SIX months after our return date. Oh NO! Does he have to get an expedited passport? Who cares? The Italians or the Americans when we return? We are trying to reach a consulate as we speak to try to find out the answer.
According to the Italian Embassy in Washington DC, your passport needs three months of validity: http://tinyurl.com/5fjpcu
Immigration officials have a lot of discretion when it comes to this, as long as you have a return ticket and are from a "rich" country like the US or Canada they usually make exceptions even if your within the three months.
I would go ahead and renew it. You should have enough time to get it back at this point given that you have two months until you go and most renewals take far less time than that.
Thanx for the info. The three month is a relief. And we only have ONE month not two until we go, so think we won't try to renew until we return. Molto grazie.
No need for a renewal for Italy....as Michael noted, the country only requires three months validity. Foreign Affairs in Ottawa notes "A Canadian passport is required for Canadians intending to visit Italy, and it should be valid for at least three months beyond the date of the expected departure from this country."
Norm is correct. You're fine...
