2027 Outstanding Travel Experiences Bucket List

In 2027 will celebrate a very significant birthday and right now I travel to europe twice a year, going to up it to 3x a year in 2026 and are already planned/booked. S, F. solo traveler. I have decided that since I adore Paris and go almost yearly must do that for at least a month or 2 in 2027 and another trip will be experiences that are held once a year (or almost). And that is the focus of this posting.

Although I never travel in the summer as it is too hot for me, I need to for most of those exceptional (to me) experiences in July. I hope to do the Palio in Siena (June 20-July 3), running of the bulls In Pamplona (July 10-11 are the dates I will view it), tripping on a short trip on the Orient Express and going transatlantic on one of the Queens.

I have read 1000 places to go before you die, will do Bastille Day in 2026 before a Baltic cruise and wish I could do the Tattoo in Edinburgh but that is too late in August and the Palio is important to me. Will also go to Sagrada Familia to see it finally finished and stop in Andorra to complete all the small countries of the world list. Traveling since I was 16, up to 72 countries and will add 4 from Eastern Europe in a few weeks.

So late June 2027 to very early August 2027 is there anything I am really missing? Catholic, so can do saint's festivals. Recommendations for any yearly event I might consider or you thought outstanding. Thanks very much.

Janet!

Awesome topic. It's great to have bucket lists, and yes, for me as well they all involve Europe and its environs.

But for me, I don't really need an event or holiday or memorial to make the list. Mine involve, for lack of a better term, the act of 'being'. Not necessarily assimilating in a European country, but more observing daily life without affecting it with my presence. And like you, off-season for sure as summer, heat & crowds are a bad combo for my well-being. Does that make sense?

And this takes time on the ground. Example--I've spent a week in Rome, at an apartment in the Campo de' Fiori neighborhood, in February. Rented a small AirBnB for myself & my wife, within walking distance to virtually everything. I really, really dug establishing a routine of sorts, from early morning talking to a couple favorite vendors to a brisk walk on the Tiber, stopping at my favorite barista for a quickie espresso, having breakfast in the apartment after shopping for fruit and pastries, and deciding what to do that day. That week made me want to do 3, or 4. I'll settle for 2 a year from next March.

Some other 'destinations-de-bucket', some places I've never been as of yet...where if I'm making a rule of thumb it would be a week basing in one location:

(Italy) Trapani or Erice in Sicily

(Switzerland) Lauterbrunnen in March

(France) Paris, 6th arrondissement / Lyon near the Bocuse market

(Denmark) Copenhagen...ever since Hans Christian Andersen w/Danny Kaye!

(UK) Soho

What a great topic!
If it were me, I'd add a night at the Arena opera in Verona (June-Sept) and I'd try to be on the Champs-Élysées for the final stage of the Tour de France in July (not yet confirmed for 2027)
I hope you'll let us all know how it turns out!

June 23-24: https://discoveralmunecar.com/the-magical-night-of-san-juan-in-almunecar/

We happened to be here during a trip to Spain, and it was great! We had a small apartment overlooking the beach area. Almunecar is a small beach town on the southern coast of Spain. We swam in the ocean at midnight with the locals and joined in around the giant bonfires that were lit on the beach. There is a parade through the old town, and it's a beautiful area to spend time.

How exciting to tick off so many bucket-list experiences!

I don't have another suggestion for that time of year. The one event I would highly recommend is Las Fallas de Valencia, but that is in March.

I also want to make sure you are careful not to overstay in the Schengen zone. Use a Schengen calculator like https://www.visa-calculator.com/ to ensure you don't go beyond 90 days.

...and wish I could do the Tattoo in Edinburgh but that is too late in August...

It ran Aug 1 - 23 this year, are you reading something different for 2026, or for 2027? We attended the Tattoo in early August 2003, so I think those dates are more or less the same every year. I rate it as one my favorite things we have done in 40 years of European travel, if that helps your decision.

Wow! Thanks for all the tips and suggestions, so many unknown to me!

Tattoo: a friend was at the Tattoo toward the end of August so I thought the Tattoo was just a the end of August--thanks for giving me the dates. My desire is to do the transatlantic on one of the Queens and it either July 16 or August 13. So could do the Tattoo at the beginning of August but for this particular trip too much time between other set in stone events and the Tattoo and August 16 crossing. Sooooo, since doing UK castles is on my list will move into 2028 and do UK castles and the Tattoo!

Magical Night in Almunecar June 23-24: This sounds lovely. It would mean going to Spain in June, then getting to Siena for the July 2 Palio and heading back to Spain for the bulls (July 6-14).I had to backtrack but it is doable at least. This is just this kind of trip to have to break out of my strict sort of logical mode in order to make schedules work.

Verona Opera: I will be in Verona in April and will be sure to take the Opera in then.

City Stays: usually I stay in Paris for a month as there is so much to see and do that every 2 years or so. Other times on various trips to Europe will stop in for either a week or more. July 2026 will be there for Bastille Day! Otherwise I break a country into sections and spent a month in Provence, or most recently about 5 weeks in Southern Italy of the boot area.

My children: sorry, no inheritance for you!

The most amazing fireworks display we've ever seen was the Rhine in Flames, which is a series of fireworks shows happening every summer in multiple places along the Rhine in Germany. You can buy a boat ticket and see it from the water, or watch it among the crowds on shore, which is what we did in St. Goar in 2014. Absolutely spectacular. There's one scheduled for Rudesheim/Bingen on July 3, 2027, which seems to conflict with your Palio plans. But there are others all summer, if you could fit one in.

Busójárás in Mohács over carnival week.

This is something I have long wanted to do. It seems like it would be incredible.
