20 June Train Strike

Hello,

I will be in Italy, travelling from Canada, during the national general strike set to start the evening on June 19 until late on June 20, 2025.

We are currently scheduled to depart from Monterosso al mare on June 20, 2025 on a regional train, departing @ 7:32 am and arriving in La Spezia @ 7:45 a.m.; and transfer in La Spezia to a high-speed train (Frecciargento), departing @ 8:32 am and arriving in Rome at 11:32 am.

Due to the national general strike, I have contacted italiaRail/Trenitalia, who have indicated that they have not been informed of a strike and that our reservation is not impacted.

Yet, I'm very leery that the articles I have been reading indicate that there will be many disruptions and cancellations.

As I am unfamiliar with railway strikes in Italy, I'm looking on guidance whether I should adjust my train reservation and associated accommodations to depart on June 19 rather than June 20.

Thanks in advance for any guidance that can be provided.

Your train from Monterosso to La Spezia should run because the local Regionale trains are guaranteed to run even during a strike from 6am-9am and again in the evening so Italian workers can get to and from work.

It looks like your train , FA #8551 is NOT on the list of guaranteed trains, so I think you’re better off not attempting to travel to Rome on June 20. I would change my plans to travel the morning of strike day before the strike begins at 9pm on June 19 and get to Rome before all the chaos begins. There are several high-speed trains with no change of trains departing La Spezia for Rome between noon and 14:00 on June 19.

Trenitalia should refund your money for the train tix you’re holding after the strike occurs.

Traveling the day after the strike can still be problematic because trains that were stopped en route to their final destinations have to be repositioned before schedules get back on track. That can take the better part of a day.

Good luck to you.
