2 weeks in the Dolomites’. What to see, where to stay?

We are planning 2 early weeks in Sept. Would like to focus on the Dolomite region this trip. What are some good towns / places to stay. What should we see?

Thanks. Richard & Judy.

Stay in Ortisei for part of the time. Wonderful hiking up in the mountain valleys reached by gondolas and funiculars. See if you can get a reservation at Hotel Grones, walkable to the escalators down into town. We left our car intheir garage the whole time we were there. Their dining room is excellent too.

It's all about the outdoors and hiking. We go every year to the Val Gardena. You will "see" the peaks and the beautiful green valleys and high alpine meadows. Of course there are towns as well, but the reason to go is to be in the mountains.

There are many separate areas to the Dolomites: Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba, Three Peaks, etc. you might want to peruse this site https://www.dolomitisuperski.com/en/SuperSummer then come back with more specific questions.

I plan to devote a full day with a car from Bolzano to Reifenstein Castle and then head south to Ortisei and back to Bolzano. Is this packing in too much?

Yes. Packing in too much. Plan on at least one night in Ortisei. It is a good 30-40 drive along a narrow road from the main highway heading north out of Bolzano. Plus, you will want to take a gondola up to the surrounding peaks for some hiking or viewpoints.
