We just booked great roundtrip tickets to Rome (March 23 - April 6) and are trying to decide if we should go somewhere else for 3 or 4 days. We're also thinking of an overnight to see Herculaneum & Pompeii. So maybe a 3 - 4 days trip that includes Herculaneum & Pompeii? I'd love some suggestions, thanks.

you have the right idea ;
take the train to Naples and then transfer to the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento
Stay in Sorrento or St Angello for cheaper prices and less tourists and take the trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum from there.

Orvieto is a 90 minute Train ride from Rome. It would give you the feeling of a hill town. It’s very beautiful there.

Sorrento is wonderful but so is staying in Naples for Pompeii and Heraculaneum. Nice time of year to visit.

Yes, diveloonie, Scott is great! It's an amazing fare, can't usually get to the East Coast for that price.
