2 weeks in Piedmont, Turin, Dolomites and ???????

My husband, 23 year old son and I are planning a 2 week trip to northern Italy in late September. Currently, we are planning to fly in and out of Milan (but would consider flying home out of Venice), drive to Neive (Piedmont) for 3 nights, then to Turin for 2 nights and drop the car. From there, we plan on taking the train to Bolzano and bussing to Ortisei for a 4 night stay. We lived in Naples for a short period but never made it up north! As a family, we enjoy hiking, food, culture and history.

We have another 3-4 days after Ortisei and feel we can add one additional stop on our trip, but we are waffling between Venice and Lago di Garda. Venice isn't a place my husband is especially interested in because of things he has heard, like crowds, smells and crazy prices, but my son loves a good city and I feel like if we are already in the area we should go. Lago di Garda sounds like a beautiful, relaxing place but I'm wondering if it will be a similar vibe to Ortisei.

Looking forward to hearing any perspectives you have on the timeline, the progression of our trip & your experiences in either Venice or Lago di Garda.

My first thought is that 2 nights in Turin isn't very much. I haven't been, but it is on my list and from what i have seen there is quite a lot to see there with wonderful food. Why not add a night or two there at least? It is also a city for your son.

Also, it is not clear if you are staying in Milan at all. But why not start or end there for a couple of nights?

How fun! We love traveling with our adult children as well. Another thought since it's on your route to Ortisei is a stop in Verona. From there it's easy to move on to Bolzano and north to Ortisei. If you decide not to include Venice, an option would include north to Innsbruck and fly out of Munich. Things to consider!

I agree the existing itinerary could use some “airing out”—only two full days for Piemonte and only one full day for Turin seems woefully brief! I would address that part before choosing additional stops.

I love Venice. It is my happy place. I am returning for a fourth visit in September. Once you get out of the main tourist area, San Marco and Rialto, crowds diminish and you see the “real” Venice. You need to see Venice at least once. It’s like no other city.

It sounds like you have done a lot of research and planning. I just about have my trip to northern Italy planned. I think you need to add a night to Torino if you can. There is a lot to see and do. I heard that the Egyptian Museum is one of the largest outside of Egypt. If you’re car buffs, there’s a car museum. I haven’t visited before; I’m staying in Torino three nights which gives me two full days plus partial days.

Have a great trip!

Venice is one of the great sights of the world, and even one day is enough to see plenty of amazing things. It is way different from all the major cities. Look at pictures.

Neive is tiny with very limited services. While you can use it as a base, you'll be spending a great deal of time driving on day trips. Alba would be much more enjoyable. Look at spending more time in Turin, then visit Stresa and enjoy Lago Maggiore and Isola Bella before moving on.

I stayed for two nights In Turin last September. I ate at Tabui Ristorante Tartufi and enjoyed it very much. My first afternoon, recovering from jet lag, I walked on a street named Garibaldi which is a pedestrian walkway, enjoyed a bicerin at a cafe, and started exploring the different piazzas. I walked a lot in Turin in the historic section and loved the architecture. I went to the Royal Palace and found it beautiful and interesting. I walked to the Monte di Cappellina which gives a beautiful view of the city and the mountains beyond. I also went to a photographic exhibition that was advertised on posters around town but can't find the name of the place now. I also took my own self-guided tour of the neighborhood where there are a number of art deco buildings. There was also a Botticelli to Munch exhibition near the Royal Palace that I went to. I walked through the Roman ruins and the many porticoes. I packed in a lot. I did not have time for the Egyptian Museum. Will you have a car? I read about some beautiful places to go that you would need a car for, but I was relying on public transportation. For me, I could have stayed one more night but I was able to do a lot in the day and a half that I was there. One night, I ate at Tabui Ristorante Tartufi and enjoyed it very much. I had lovely weather which guided my choices. If it had been rainy, I would have skipped the art deco buildings and gone to the Egyptian Museum.

Turin is definitely less crowded than Rome, Venice, Naples, and Florence. There were a fair number of French tourists.

I flew to Milan and departed from Venice. Venice does have a lot of people and I found the vaporetta system stressful. But it has incredibly beautiful buildings. St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace felt crowded but for example, Ca'Rezzonico, a mid-17th century palace, was breathtaking and didn't have many visitors at all.

On a different trip, I have been to Torbole in Lake Garda which was wonderful. There was hiking and biking and historic sites and gorgeous views. Obviously, Lake Garda and Venice are very different experiences.

Note to self: I thought I took good notes on my trip and September about the specific places I went. It turns out I have missing details. I need to make sure to take a photo of the name of the gallery or museum or palazzo as I enter.

Thank you so much for all of the advice! We took bits and pieces and came up with this itinerary...
Fly into Munich and visit Innsbruck for 4 days
Take the scenic train to Bolzano and stay in Ortisei for 4 days
Drive from Ortisei to Bra for 3 days
Drive from Bra to Turin for 4 days
Fly out of Milan.

Thanks for all of the details...including the restaurant recommendations!
