2 weeks in June with kids, revised

After much thought I am favoring the following itinerary. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Fly into pula,Croatia. Rent car and spend 3 nights there with day trips to rovinj and maybe Slovenian coast.

Ferry to Venice. 4 nights there including day trips to the lido

Rent car and drive to an agriturismo for a week. Lots of trips to Florence, Siena, montalcino, etc.

Fly out of Firenze or Pisa

Also- for that trip which of ricks books would you buy? I'm thinking my Italy 2002 book is a little out of date !

This sounds pretty sane. Do you know the ferry only runs a few times each week so you have to be certain of your departure day?

In Venice you might do the Lido for a day, but don't put too many plans for day trips. Venice is lovely just to wander about and one of the most delightful things to do, IMO, is go to the Laguna islands. Rick Steves has a self-guided tour in his Venice Guidebook.

I think you will need the Croatia book, the Venice book, and the Florence and Tuscany book. The Venice and Florence/Tuscany books have much more detail than the Italy book. Hope you can have those on a Kindle or iPad for weight reduction!

I would not purchase a book for just three days in Croatia. The Istria tourism website is really good.
You may wish to stay in Rovinj, as everyone seems to love it more than Pula.
I would get a Venice book maybe and definitely a Tuscany book.
