I've read through Rick Steves's book on the places we want to be sure to visit the travel times between each. I'm having trouble deciding on a route Rome - 2 days and 2 nights Positano - 3 nights, 2 full days (non-stop train to Florence) Florence - 4 nights, 3 full days with day trip to Siena or another hill town Cinque Terre - 3 nights, 2 full days Flying from Pisa to Paris for 2 days or should we go straight from the airport in Rome to Positano and spend a couple days in Rome on the way back through Positano - 3 nights, 2 full days Rome - 2 nights Florence - 4 nights, 3 full days with day trip to Siena or another hill town Cinque Terre - 3 nights, 2 full days
Flying from Pisa to Paris for 2 days
Lindsay, have you been to Rome before? 2 nights really means only 1 full day in Rome. I would go directly to Positano if your plane gets in early enough. IMO it is a better location for getting over jetlag than Rome. 5 locations in that amount of time is pretty ambitious. You will be losing alot of time in transit. Since you generally lose a half day each time you change locations (pack, check out of hotel, get to train station, ride train, get from train station to new hotel, check into hotel, unpack) you will be losing 2.5 days with this schedule. Just a warning! :-)
I haven't been to Rome, but am okay with only spending a day there. A few have actually recommended that a one or two day trip is sometimes best. I'm more looking forward to the other places. That does make sense about going straight to Positano. It will be more relaxing and give us time to adjust. But if it seems to be too much as we nail down our plans, we will probably cut out Positano and save Southern Italy for another trip. Thanks!
