2 weeks in italy in mid 9/08-please comment on itinerary

Please comment on itinerary! No driving. Just public transportion. Fly USA to Milan, train to Venice, 3 nights in Venice with day tour to Dolomites, train to Florence-4 nights with day trips to Siena/other Tuscanny town, train to La Spezia with connection to Cinque Terre (1 night), train to Rome (4 nights). Amalfi coast possible from Rome? First time in Italy with husband and daughter and son-in-law mid September, 2008. I'd appreciate any comments. Lyn

Looks OK. Sequencing is good and the number of nights in each location is also good with the exception of the CT where I would suggest an extra night. Two questions. How many nights do you have after the 4 in Rome to visit the Amalfi coast and from which airport do you depart? If you need to get back to Milan for departure, my comments would be different from those describing a departure from Rome.

I think this looks really good, but of my personal preference I would suggest 2 nights in the Cinque Terre and 3 nights in Rome.

I did a very similar trip last year, and I found that by the 3rd night in Rome I was getting antsy. Though I only did the biggies during my visit: a full day tour of the Vatican, the Coliseum and Roman Forum, the Borghese Gallery, and the Pantheon. Plus-the Cinque Terre is beautiful, and very different from the experiences you will have in the other destinations you have listed. Whatever you decide, you will have a good time!

Agree with other posters- in '01 we were limited in time and wanted at least a look at Amalfi and a stop at Pompeii. We don't generally like Bus Tours... the visit to Pompeii was excellent, guide et al and we saw some beautiful parts of the Amalfi Coast... overall though the experience was disappointing as we spent too many hours picking up other fares and doing the Bus Company's business including the requisite stop at a place to try to get us to buy junk. Hopefully your day tour is escorted for the Dolomites is a fair distance from Venice and a slow road in the dolomites, pick limited sights in Tuscany as San Gimi. and Siena otherwise you will be running. Amalfi warrants at least 3 nights so save it for another trip. Italy is so wonderful one cannot fit everything in. How about adding 3-4 more days if you can?

I also suggest at least two nights in the Cinque Terre.I also cant imagine 4 nights in Florence. For my money Id stay in Siena and day trip to Florence,Pisa and other hill towns.
