Jim,
Into Venice and out of Naples (or Rome) is a good path, using trains in between. Do you have Rick Steves' Guide to Italy? It is a great starting point for planning a trip - especially a first trip - to Italy. Lots of pointers on logistics.
What is your home airport? Can't help you with suggested flight options if we don't know where you are. People post here from all continents (except for Anctartica, no penguins interested in Europe yet).
Flight options out of NAP are not plentiful or necessarily cheap. You might want to also consider checking flights out of Rome Fiumicino (FCO).
Assuming May 4 arrival and May 30 dep, you have 16 nights on the ground.
My suggested allocation:
Fly to VCE.
Venice. 3 nights (one day trip to Murano+Burano islands, or to Padua)
Florence (base for Tuscany). 4 or 5 nights (2 days for Florence, the rest day trips to Tuscan location)
Naples area (Sorrento?). 4 or 5 nights (see Pompeii, Amalfi coast, Capri, Procida/Ischia, Vesuvius, Naples)
Rome. 4 nights (possible trip to Orvieto)
return from FCO
All ground travel by train.
Please clarify whether May 14 and May 30 are your arrival/departure dates from home or in Italy.
Roberto's itinerary is good and easy to accomplish by train. You picked great dates but you may get a couple of rainy days. The RS Italy book will be very useful for your first time in Italy - and watch the videos, you will enjoy them and get lots of info.
