My husband and I have booked our air flying into and out of Milan for April/May. We will have 2 complete weeks. I tried to change our return to leave from Rome, but it would have cost too much to justify the change. Can anyone suggest an itinerary please? We are ok with not seeing Lake Como, and areas south of Rome (not that we don’t want to, but realize it’s likely not able to happen in 2 weeks). Hoping to see Cinque Terre, Venice, Florence, the hill towns, and Rome. And of course need to end up back in Milan.
Appreciate your help!
Venice for 3 nights; Florence for 3-5 nights with daytrips to Siena and Lucca; Rome for 4 nights.
That leaves two nights extra for places like Orvieto (1- hour from Rome), Pompeii or elsewhere depending on your interests.
As above
Take train to Venice on arrival
Spend last night or 2 in Milan( or if no interest in Milan go to Stresa on Lake Maggiore-easy to get to MXP from there
I might change above order
Venice 3
Rome 4
Then work your way North-Orvieto then Florence then back to Milan
What time do you arrive in Milan? If early enough in the day you could head that day for either Venice or CT and then make a loop that gets you back to Milan the day before your return flight.
The suggestion by Kenko omits CT which is what you could do with what he calls the '2 extra days'.
Trying to do Pompeii from Rome is in my view a non ideal choice given the amount of time you have and all the other places you have on your list. Your trip should be enjoyable, not merely survivable.
Milan-Venice-Rome-Florence/Tuscany-CT-Milan. Or the reverse order depending on what time you arrive in Milan.
14 or 15 nights ?
Personally I would drop Rome. For your next trip you can start there. One of the reasons for that is that Easter is late this year ( April 20) and next year is the Jubilee year when Rome may experience a lot of tourists/ pilgrims. As well it is farther from your other preferred areas. If you did that you can easily do the following :
Milan to Venice ( 3 nights)
Venice to Florence ( 3 nights)
Florence to Siena or Lucca and/ or hill town 3-4 nights
Cinque Terre 3 nights
Milan 1-2 nights at end
You could drop a night from a couple of the above and get to see Lake Como that way too.
