2 week Itinerary Help - Rome and North

We are planning a 16-day, 15 night trip the first of April (tentatively 4/6 - 4/21) next year and I have no idea where to start!. Italy is my dream vacation. We are getting married 12/30, so this will be our honeymoon. I know I can't see it all, no matter how much I want to. I'm just going to hope I get to come back. We were originally going to do Rome and south because Pompeii is an absolute must-see for me. But, we have discovered my fiancé's great-grandmother immigrated to America from Varese. His great-grandfather came from somewhere in that area too. So, now he would really like to go up there. He would give it up for me, but I don't want him to have to do that. We would also like to see the Dolomites. So, now it looks like we'll do Rome and north. I love history, ancient culture. He loves nature.

Here is what I was thinking:

Day 1 - Fly into Milan, head to Varese. Overnight Varese.

Day 2 - Varese and area. Overnight Varese.

Day 3 - Head to Val Gardena or Castelrotto.

Day 4 - Dolomites. (Overnight) the Dolomites are more of a drive around and look how pretty it is. Not hike or anything.

Day 5 - Head to Venice

Day 6 - Venice

Day 7 - Venice morning. Head to Florence.

Day 8 - 10 - Florence and day trips

Day 11 - Head to Rome.

Day 12 - 15 - Rome. Day trip to Pompeii.

Day 16 - Fly out of Rome.

Is this reasonable/a decent itinerary? A good time to travel? Any thoughts on the Dolomites? Any other places we should definitely see/sub in? He loves the ocean (he's a sport fishing captain), but my plan is to do the Amalfi Coast on a future visit (fingers crossed), so that's why I left off Cinque Terre.

I'm overwhelmed with information and need to get a basic itinerary planned out before I do a deep dive. Thank you!

Note that the first part of your trip will coincide with the last weeks of the ski season in the Dolomites. Beautiful, but possibly snowy/bad weather in the mountains.

I hope you are not planning on driving the whole time. You'll spend your whole honeymoon behind the wheel with sore butts. I can see driving at the start for Varese and to the Dolomites, but ditch the car when you get to Venice and use the train thereafter.

For the possibility of better weather in the north you might reverse your itinerary arriving at Rome and departing from Milan.

Sam - do we need a car for around Florence/Tuscany?

Laurie Ann - That’s a great idea. I didn’t think of that!

Well, you did say Florence, a singularly not-car-friendly city, as is Venice. If you hang on to the car, it will sit in an expensive garage in Venice, then an expensive drive to Florence where you will have to stay in the 'burbs and not the historic center. I think if you want to drive around Tuscany, why not just rent a car for the day? You are only in Florence for 3 full days.

A train will whisk you from the Grand Canal in Venice to the center of historic Florence in 2 1/4 hours. Florence to Rome is 1 1/2 hours. A car will be a burden in all these cities.

If Pompeii is a must-see for you, you should not do a day trip which will be long (spent mostly on transport) and unsatisfying. Staying overnight would also allow you to bookend the site visit with a couple of hours in the Archeological Museum in Naples, where the artifacts from Pompeii are found. Especially since you love ancient history, consider skipping Florence and put those days to use in Rome and Naples.

Yes to reversing the trip to hopefully have a better situation in the Dolomites. April could still be too early with melting snow for exploring the mountains. You don’t really see the mountains well unless you take the funicular and/or the gondolas up where you’ll get off in a beautiful mountain meadow. You can go for a walk and there are places to eat too. I have a terrible fear of heights and did not have any problems.
You should probably not only reverse the order of your locations but also the timing. May would be a safer bet.
