My husband and I, and another couple plan to travel to Italy for 2 weeks next April. The places we would like to see are Venice, Rome, Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, Tuscany. We will be renting a car, and taking a train in areas where a car isn't practical. Which would be the most practical airport to fly into, and out of? Is it reasonable to see this much in 14 days, or is there an area we should eliminate?
We are also planning to stay in B&B's rather than hotels. Are there any B&B's that you could recommend in these areas?
Thanks for your help!
It is a lot for 14 days. Better to count nights, by the way. Consider this. I'll plug in dates for planning to illustrate.
April 3 leave U.S., arrive Venezia April 4
April 4-7 (3 nights) Venezia
April 7 travel to "Tuscany" - here you need to decide what that means to you. Use Firenze as a base to explore? Stay on one or two hill towns to get a sense for the countryside?
April 7-11 (4 nights) somewhere in Tuscany. If you like wine, Montalcino or Montepulciano would be excellent. If you like art, Firenze is the place for you.
April 11 travel to Sorrento - use as a base for Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast
April 11-14 (3 nights) Sorrento
April 14 travel to Rome
April 14-18 (4 nights) Rome
That is actually 15 nights counting your night on the plane.
You would need a car if you stay in hill towns, but probably not if you stay in Firenze. Venezia to Firenze by train and rent a car if going to the countryside. Return the car and take trains to Sorrento and Rome. Fly into Venezia and out of Rome. Note Easter is the first weekend of April is likely booked up already (assuming you mean 2015).
B&Bs: search Booking.com or Google B&B in XXXX city. I find a lot of them more and more using the latter technique.
I think she means 2016. Easter is 3/27 next year.
While I can't remember any specific B&B's, for my upcoming trip I have booked 3 rooms ( Munich, Verona, and Lucca) that I found through Airbnb, as I prefer B&B's also. My only requirement is a private room with private bath! For the others, I just googled as Laurel mentioned.
If I do say so myself, I've gotten pretty good at finding lodgings that are clean, comfortable, and have a bit of charm, and that don't "break the bank." My process is to look on Tripadvisor and booking.com. I like using the latter because you get instant confirmation. It's always wise to check their prices against those you would get by booking directly, but I've never found a huge discrepancy - - sometimes 10 euro/night, sometimes nothing. TA will put you onto some properties that aren't available on booking.com.
