2 week Europe trip, need advise with Italy & Croatia

Hello All,

My wife & I are doing a 2 week Europe tour, this is our first visit to this side and we are very excited. As of now we have booked our tickets to land in Switzerland, Geneva (Day 1) and fly out of Athens, Greece (Day 15).

As visiting the alps have been on my list for a very long time, I have already planned my itinerary for Switzerland for the first 4 days. The remaining 11 days is what I'm trying to figure out, and I have an idea on what I would like to do. I would like your suggestions, opinions and advise to better plan my trip.

Ideally we would like to go to the following places in the below listed order...

  • Venice from Switzerland and spend 3 days there.
  • Either Amalfi coast for 3 days or Croatia, Dubrovnik for 3 days ** ( My wife really wants to go to Dubrovnik, where as I think Amalfi coast might be a better option. What do you all think?)**
  • Santorini, Greece for 3 days
  • Finish the trip in Athens for 2 days and fly back home.

Do let me know your thoughts regarding this on what you think I should do, take out, keep & add to this based on your experience.

Thank you for your help!

Count nights, not days, especially if an overnight train or ferry is part of the plan.

Dubrovnik: Happy wife, happy life. Amalfi Coast would be great if you were spending more time in Italy, but since Venezia is your only Italian stop, skip the Amalfi Coast this time. Also, the Coast of Croatia is beautiful.

As it is, you are traveling a lot of long distances with not much time in each location .

You need to take travel time into account. Your tentative plans add up to 11 days in Venice, Amalfi/Dubrovnik and Greece, but you don't have that many days after subtracting time spent getting from place to place. Use the Deutsche Bahn website to investigate rail travel times and Skyscanner to check out flight options.

You're trying to cover areas that are really too widely scattered for the amount of time you have. You'd have far more vacation and less travel if you covered a smaller area, like the Swiss Alps + Italy.

In cost an issue? Have you priced out the options?.... and as already mentioned you seem to have a lot of places for the number of days available

Day 1 - Geneva (arrival day)
Day 2 - Alps
Day 3 - Alps
Day 4 - Leave Alps for Venice
Day 5 - Venice
Day 6 - Venice
Day 7 - Leave Venice for ???
Day 8 - ???
Day 9 - ???
Day 10 - Leave ??? for Santorini
Day 11 - Santorini
Day 12 - Santorini
Day 13 - Leave Santorini for Athens
Day 14 - Athens
Day 15 - Fly home

So 6 of your 15 days will be spent on the road? Some of these journeys will be long, such as Venice to Dubrovnik and Dubrovnik to Santorini. It doesn't seem like a relaxing vacation at all to me.

Thank you everyone for the quick reply and sharing your thoughts on this. After taking your suggestions into consideration, it's clear to me that we have too many places on our list for a very little time. This is why we have decided to cut out a few places and enjoy more rather than travel more. I have revised the itinerary below and still would like your suggestion on a few questions listed below. Rather than going from the alps to Venice to Croatia/Amalfi Coast to Greece...we figured we either cut of Italy completely or Croatia completely and do I city in Italy...see below.

Day 1 - Geneva (arrival day)
Day 2 - Alps
Day 3 - Alps
Day 4 - Alps
Day 5 - Leave Alps for Croatia or Venice ***(What do you guys think on where we should go?* Or would you suggest something else?**
Day 6 – Croatia or Venice
Day 7 – Croatia or Venice
Day 8 – Croatia or Venice
Day 9 - Leave Croatia or Venice for Santorini
Day 10 - Santorini
Day 11 - Santorini
Day 12 - Santorini
Day 13 - Leave Santorini for Athens
Day 14 - Athens
Day 15 – Athens & Fly home

Cost is not an issue, so we are okay with the budget situation. Thank you all for your help :)

Consider:

If you go from the Alps to Venice you will likely take a train.

If you go from the Alps to Dubronik, you will need to fly from Zurich to Dubrovnik.

To get from Dubrovnik to Santorini, you will need to fly.

From Venice to Santorini, you will need to fly.

That is a lot of time for Santorini. It is all about a beautiful view, crowded with cruise ship tours, beaches are not very good. Couldn't wait to get out of there and I love Greece. Consider a better island such as Naxos or Paros which are much more Greek.

When is your trip? Time of year can make a big difference on the desirability of visiting the Alps, Greece, or Croatia.
