2 visits to Vatican--stay nearby or closer to Pantheon, Colo, Trevi?

We're a group of 6 staying for 3 days in Rome. Yes, "whirlwind tour." We have a 3 day time limit (end of a larger trip).
Two days are Vatican-centric: 7:45am to go to Wed Papal Audience, and back the next day to tour the Vatican. We'd also see Colo, Trevi, etc. Should we stay near Vatican, and if so, how is the Prati area? Or, closer to Pantheon, Trevi or Colo to walk to tourist areas and take a cab to Vatican? I've been before and usually stay on Via Nazionale and walk everywhere (but Vatican).

If you plan to visit the Vatican Museums,I would stay at the Hotel Museo-down the steps from the Vatican Museum. Enjoyable hotel and great location.

I stayed in Prati for a recent 2 day short stay and loved it. Walked to the vatican a couple of times and it was super convenient. Plus the metro stations are close & make it easy to get to Colosseo or wherever

An overview of the sites visitors usually see in Rome has the Vatican at one end and the Colosseum at the other end. Centrally located is Piazza Navona and the Pantheon— an area that makes most of Rome’s sites walkable. Since it is crowded with visitors, some prefer to stay just across the river in the Trastevere or Prati neighborhoods. The Trianon Borgo Pio Aparthotel is in this neighborhood.

We stayed in the Prati area for 2 weeks 4 years ago. We enjoyed the area; great restaurants, and easy to walk over one of the bridges to the other tourist sites plus lots of bus routes. We are back again next month and will stay in Prati but closer to Piazza Cavour. There is a less crowded ‘tourist’ feel to the neighbourhood which we liked.

I think Prati will be a great area. Easy access to metro, Vatican and you can get to Pantheon and the Spanish steps easily as well. Colosseum is not super close but there is a metro stop there.

thinking NH Giustiniano in Prati. The "nicest" place within our budget of $250/night in September. Yes/no? Other suggestions? Looks like we could walk to St. Peters and also the next day for Vatican tour. And take a taxi to other tourist spots?

Glad to see the love for Prati. It’s a very nice neighborhood (a little more modern) that’s close to the Vatican and affordable. It’s one of the few places where the metro line feels actually super handy. You can use it to get close to most major sights (though not so much the heart of Rome: Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiore, Pantheon.)

There are also a few bus routes that take you from Prati to the other side of the river and the popular sights. We had a transit pass and used it each day even if for a few stops to get to areas we would then explore.

If you decide to stay near the Vatican, and staying in a convent sounds interesting, I recommend Casa per Ferie Santa Maria alla Fornace. We stayed there a few years back and it was super convenient, not just for the Vatican, but easy bus into central Rome too. Nice walks and restaurants in the area too. http://www.santamariafornaci.com/

I think the NH Collection Giustiniano looks like a good hotel in a good location for what you want to do and see in Rome. I have stayed at NH Collections in the past, and have found them very comfortable. The hotel is also within short walking distance of L'Arcangelo, should you want a nice (upscale-ish) restaurant for Roman dishes.

Stay less based on the sites you want to see, and more based on what you want to do in the evening. Basically, you want a nice neighborhood that offers some strolling, a few nice dinner options, and a couple good gelato places. Second would be a few nice cafes for coffee and something light in the morning.
