2 short days in Umbria

Hi all!

We have just two short days/nights in Umbria, leaving with a car from Rome and then heading to Sorrento via train. Our Italian friends suggested Spoleto as a good town to stay in, and perhaps go to Oriveto and Todi on the drive from Rome to Spoleto, and then venturing to Assisi and/or Nocria on our second day. Is there a more efficient way to do this? Different things we should see? A better place to stay? We want to eat a little, walk a lot, and maybe explore some wine country near Orvieto. We realize our time is quite limited, but we would like to see a little of what Umbria has to offer and perhaps plan our return. Thank you for any help!

I would just spend whatever time you have in Orvieto and rent a car to go out into the countryside. It is just a 70 minute train ride from Rome Termini. The Hertz rental office is just across the street from the train station. Civita is southwest of there, and it is an incredible sight.

Spoleto is quite a good place to stay if you want to go to Assisi as a day trip. Take an early morning train from Spoleto to Assisi then from Assisi train station take a bus up to the stop closest to the basilica. Quite easy.
