2 nts in the Dolomites in June

We are a group of 6 (4 adults, 2 teens) who will be spending 2 nights in Santa Cristina Val Gardena next June as part of a 3 week road trip. We will arrive on a Monday afternoon (day after intl flight) and continue to Venice on Wednesday.

Can anyone recommend any great restaurants with great views that are relatively easily accessable via either gondola or funicular (no chair lifts for us!). I want to spend as much time as possible enjoying the view, but ease into the hiking. Covid has done a number on my lung capacity, which I hope to improve by then, but hiking for hours (especially uphill!) isn’t looking good at the moment.

I’m hoping to create a short list of restaurants that we can take a ride up to, have a great meal, walk around for an hour or so, then ride back down. It looks like most lifts stop operating around 6pm. We will arrive about 2pm on Day 1, so probably have time for one lift that day. Day 2 we plan to go to Seceda and maybe 1 or 2 other gondolas/funiculars in the area (Ciampioni, Seiser Alm or Col Raiser). Day 3 we can take a lift before heading to Venice. Any recommendations?

Be sure to check the Seceda opening date. The year we were in the area from June 5-10, Seceda wasn't opening until June 15.

At Col Raiser, there is a restaurant in the hotel at the lift station and also a hütte called Odles behind it that is very good, typical cuisine. If you want to walk half an hour each way, head left from the hotel to Fermeda Hütte for great views.

The restaurant at Ciampinoi is not good. The views are good, but you also get great views and a better restaurant at Seiser Alm above Ortisei.

I highly recommend La Tambra Restaurant in S. Cristina. Pizza is great but so are the regular dinner offerings. You can also walk a lovely path from S. Cristina to Ortisei or to Selva. It is about 3 miles to either village and you can take a bus back. We like to take a bus to Selva Plan and walk the path to S. Cristina arriving in time for lunch at La Tambra.

Meant to add that Fermeda Hütte also has good food. 😉

Thanks, Laurel. We’re staying at La Tambra so we’ll be sure to eat there at some point.

The Odle hutte looks perfect for our arrival day. That view - oh my!! I can’t wait!

Travel be sure to get a Val Gardena Card, info here as you plan to take lifts all three days. It is a terrific value in most cases and in your case it means you can hop on and off lifts to your heart’s content without worrying about additional costs. This year the season for the card started June 4. On the website is a map showing covered lifts and 2022 dates they were open.
