My wife and I fly into Milan, spending 2 nights there then plan on heading to piedmont for 2 nights. No car! What home base makes sense without a car? We plan on doing a private wine tour on one of the days. The plan is trains throughout our entire 14 day trip. Ideally home base has a train close by for our next stop, cinque terre. Any and all help is greatly appreciated :-).

Asti or Alba. I believe they are connected by bus if the train line has not resumed (check Trenitalia).
Alba is surrounded by wine villages and I remember seeing signs about tours offered at the tourist office there.
Alba is an excellent choice.
I’m thinking of trying mydaytrip to get us from Milan to Alba. Thoughts on the company? They seem to have great reviews.
If it's in your budget and makes your life easier, then why not, but the train could not be simpler.
