2 nights in Rome

Hi! I'm going to be staying in Rome after a cruise just for 2 nights. I'm not familiar enough with the city; I want to stay somewhere at least a little close to the airport, but still close enough to the city to see some sights without too much hassle...there are so many hotels around the airport and in between. Any one have a good idea for somewhere to stay in the middle?

Thanks!
Julie

Would definitely advise staying near the historic city center of Rome. It's very easy to use the train to reach the airport after your stay in Rome. I would advise doing a bit of research either by guidebook or on this site to gain a bit more understanding of how easy travel between the city center and airport can be. I adore Rome and staying close to the major sites is very much worth it! I usually stay near the Termini station but have heard nearby Monti in nicer. That being said, I have stayed in Ostia Antico before an early morning flight and did enjoy the experience. Ostia Antico is very close to FCO. But it's not Rome!

Because you only have 2 nights in Rome, which often translates into basically one full day of sight-seeing, the first reply suggesting staying near the "historical center" of Rome is good advice.

Stay near the Termini station so you can easily take the Leonardo Express to the airport, runs every half hour, takes 32 minutes, costs 14 euros. Termini is also a hub for the Metro and buses for local sightseeing.

I haven't stayed there, but hotels near Termini recommended in the RS guidebook are Residenza Cellini, IQ Hotel, Hotel Aberdeen, Hotel Opera Roma, Hotel Sonya, Target Inn, Hotel Oceania, Hotel Selene Roma, Bellesuite Rome, Hotel Nardizzi Americana, Hotel Italia Roma, Hotel Margaret, Hotel Select Garden, The Beehive, Hotel Sileo, and Hotel Robinson. Also some hostels but as a cruiser I assume you've made the leap to hotels. ;-)

Staying "in between" the center and FCO would be your worst choice, I think, convenient to neither. I'd be interested in where the previous poster stayed in or around Ostia Antica before a morning flight. I tried to figure out those logistics for my trip last month but couldn't make it work. Ostia is a great sight but not a priority for a visit as short as yours will be.

I agree with the previous suggestion for staying in the Termini area. We stayed in the mentioned Residenza Celini twice and it was a 5 min. walk to Termini Station. We found this location perfect for neighborhood restaurants and 15 min. walk to attractions. www.residenzacellini.com.

There is no in-between. Stay in the Termini area. You will need to take the train from Civitavecchia (where the cruise ship docks - about an hour from Rome) to Termini. Stay in that area since it will be easy to get to and from and to the airport. Have done four cruises out of or ending in Rome. Have used Hotel Sonya, Aberdeen, and Contilla. Wife claims Sonya has the best lattes.

I would stay in the historic center, too. You will be close to Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo Di Fiori, Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps, etc. all within walking distance. Saves you time trying to get to those places. You can get a taxi to the airport for 48 euros or use Rome Cabs for 50 euros. Very easy.

Dick, we stayed at Ostia Antica Suite B&B in 2012 prior to an early flight to Sicily. We were all very pleased with the choice. Not luxurious but service was top notch. I think the drive to the airport was about 10-15 minutes. I am sure staff could arrange for a taxi if needed by a guest.

Ostia Antica Suite B&B, while reasonably close to the airport, it is a long ways from Rome and would be very inconvenient, if not difficult, to reach from Civitavecchia. That is not a convenient location from what you asked in your original posting.
