Would this be to much to do 2 in each area? We really want to experience both since they are such different cites and know we can take day trips, but thought it would be nice to do 2 in each vs 4 in one or the other and travel to the other. Would this be too much for us? I know they are about 45 minutes apart. We also are planning on doing a day trip to Capri from Sorrento
Are you still planning to do Pompeii? If so, that's a good reason to stay in Sorrento.
The previous itinerary you posted had you moving around a lot, and 3.5 days in one spot (remember: you'll lose 1/2 a day in transport from your previous location) is not really all that long. I wouldn't use any more time packing up, checking out, getting to yet another location and settling in again.
I'm in agreement with the first answer. The moving is a waste of time. Also, as far as the Amalfi Coast towns go, Amalfi and Ravello are, in my opinion, more interesting than Positano, and Ravello, more beautiful. Positano is oversupplied with stores offering over-priced beachwear and tacky souvenir shops.
We JUST did the exact same thing and I agonized over whether it was a smart plan, but it worked great !
We took the train into Naples, train into Sorrento, and bus into Positano to stay at Albergo California - great views and very affordable - 5 minute walk from the Sponda bus stop. That day we walked ALL over Positano. The next day we hiked the Sentiero degli dei - took the bus up to Nocelle - absolutely breaktaking scenery - and hiked down into Praiano, rode the bus to Amalfi and up to Ravello before taking the ferry back to Positano for dinner.
The next day we took the bus into Sorrento - about 40 minute ride - to Minerva Hotel - fabulous views and location ! We spent the day exploring Sorrento.
The following day we took the ferry to Capri - stayed all day and had a marvelous time before coming back to Sorrento for the evening.
Capri is easy from Sorrento and Ravello or Amalfi and the Sentiero degli dei hike are easy from Positano - we were happy !
I love Carla's suggestion! Looks like a great plan! We spent 4 days in Sorrento. I really wish we had stayed in Positano for 2 of those days!
Weigh up (excuse the pun) how much your luggage will make moving burdensome.
Also weigh the possibility of not begin able to use ferry service to/from Positano if the weather doesn't cooperate.
Just got back from both...stay at Hotel Mignon in Sorrento-great location (and a R. Steve's tour
was cking in as we left) and a half block to old town and 10 min. walk to Amalfi Coast bus...also
boat to Positino should be available.
Our experience: We took the boat from Sorrento to Positano, and as far as we were concerned, honestly, the best thing about Positano was viewing it from the water. Once there we found nothing of interest ...clothing and jewelry shops and that was about it. And vertical walking, if that impacts you. Our daytrip turned into a few hour trip...we had a coffee and left by boat back to Sorrento and hopped a train for Herculaneum for a much-better-spent remainder of the day. Sorrento is lovely, has easy access to many places, and is just a nice place to sort of chill out from the hectic touring pace of other more historic cities. We also stayed in the Hotel Mignon Mueble (didn't know RS did too)...this was 2008, and liked it for its convenient location and friendly staff.
