2 days in Rome, one being a Sunday

Hello!
We'll be visiting Rome for our first time in mid-October, coming in to Termini from Florence early Saturday morning, then flying out of Leonardo early Monday morning. So a quick trip! And one of those days is a Sunday, which means we have to see the Vatican on Saturday, the day we arrive. Our hotel is in Trastevere, which seems out of the way when I think about arriving at Termini, then dropping off our bags at the hotel, then having to get up to Vatican City that day. Would you recommend I rebook closer to Termini? Should I try to get to Vatican ASAP, or wait til the afternoon?

Given our arrival and departure places (Termini and Leonardi airport) AND that we are working with a Sunday, how should we structure the time and where should we stay? Thanks to any help you can provide! This forum has already been so helpful!

I like Trastevere and would definitely stay there over Termini. Once you drop off you bags, just take a taxi to the Vatican, if you are so much in a hurry. A few hours are enough to see the Vatican anyhow. Trastevere to FCO is very quick by taxi in the morning of your flight.

I concur with Roberto. There are times that taxis are the best option. They save you time, and in Rome they are reasonable. Be sure to use the official taxi station in the front of Termini, at the west end, and so not be persuaded by anyone who approaches you. Stand in line, and the chaos will sort itself out and you will get a cab.

Let your hotel call one for you when you are ready to go to the Vatican. Are you going to tour the museums? I highly recommend a guided tour to make the most of your time. You can hook up with Walks of Italy (excellent guides, small groups), or take one done by the Vatican staff, but by all means pre-arrange something.

As to your Sunday time, if this is the first time in Rome, surely you will want to see the Colosseo, Palatino, and Foro Romano. After that, it is easy to string together some sites like Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, and just stroll the historical center. Again, I recommend a guide for the Colosseo, et.al. Lines can be long, especially for security, and a guided tour will get you through a little faster.

I totally agree with Roberto and Laurel. We just completed a <24h stay in Rome between 2 destinations (we have been to Rome in other years). Budget for taxis and do stay in the Trastevere area. Enjoy history around every corner in the city center!

Three of us took a taxi from Trastavere to the Vatican in June. It's a quick trip and I believe was less than 10 euro. Although it's walkable we preferred to spend the time seeing the sights.

Thank you all so much for the feedback! I'll keep my room in Trastevere and just plan to taxi there. I appreciate your help!
