2 days in florence and 2 days in rome

we are taking the train from milan into florence for 2 nights then taking the train to Rome and staying for 2 nights then flying out of Rome. Any suggestions on hotels or areas to stay in Florence and Rome?

I like to stay in the historic center. In Florence that's about ten minutes' walk from the train station.

In Rome it's a little further (cab ride) but I prefer the Piazza Navona/Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori area over the station area.

What's your budget?

In Florence, there are lots of options for all budgets near the station and the center. Rome's attractions are spread out. I'd try to stay nearer the sights you plan to see.

I suggest taking a late afternoon or early evening train from Florence to Rome. That way, you can have a full day's sightseeing in Florence, then pick up your bags at your hotel and catch a train (take a picnic supper for the journey). There won't be much traffic in Rome by the time you get there, so a quick taxi ride to your hotel and you'll still have some time for a late walk - maybe the floodlit Colosseum, or the Trevi Fountain. Then you have an early start for your first day in Rome.
