My husband and I have two full days to travel after seeing Siena to get back to Rome. I was thinking to spend the first day and drive to Pienza and montepulciano and spend the night in montepulciano. Is it too much to see both of those in one day? Then I'd like to drive to Assisi and spend the second day and night there before driving back to Rome. Is this a good plan? I'll take any suggestions on the above or for better ideas for those two days. Thanks!
Ilana, sounds perfect! Remember that the Tuscan hill towns are small but absolutely charming. I often get out-voted on this Helpline by others who slow down and spend at least twice as long as I do in places. But you won't feel too rushed following this schedule.
The recommendation I would make is to spend those nights in one place, perhaps Siena. Pienza and Montepulciano are easily a nice day trip from Siena, and then you won't have to move to a new hotel for just one night. Coordinating that can take at least an hour off of your sightseeing time. IMO, spend the night in Siena, do Pienza and Montepulciano in one day trip, spend the next night in Siena, and stop off in Assisi on your way to Rome. The Siena -> Assisi -> Rome day will seem like a lot of driving, but you'll save stress with the hotel situation.
We stopped in Assisi and had a wonderful time. Hooked up with local guide Anne Robichaud (Rick references her in Assisi chapter) She gave an interesting well informed tour in the morning. The art in Assisi was the best we saw anywhere. Especially the Fresco's. Also the locals are good and reasonable. One in particular uses an interesting process. You will find him. Just shop or ask Anne. Also the wine tasting in near by Spello is excellent. Taxi's are cheap. Stay at the apt. San Ruffino. Top floor has best view. Big rooms. Enjoy your trip.
