2 days between Southern tour of Italy and a week at Cretaiole. Is Orvieto a good choice?

We are completing a Southern Italy tour with RS on a Thursday in early October. We have from Thursday morning post breakfast until Saturday afternoon to check in at Cretaiole. Thinking about a train from Naples to Orvieto to spend a couple of nights. Good choice? Other suggestions? Maybe rent a car in Orvieto? (My first post, so please be kind) Thanks for any and all suggestions.

Orvieto is an excellent choice! The spectacular setting, the Duomo, and the pleasant pedestrian heart of town all recommend it.

You can easily train there from Naples (about 3 hours, some direct), and pick up a car Saturday morning as you are leaving for Cretaiole. Or if you would like to visit Civita di Bagnoregio without the challenges of public transportation, pick up your car on Friday. Check with your hotel regarding parking that night.

Thanks, Mary. If we keep the car for our week at Cretaiole would it be best to return the car to Orvieto? When we are done with Cretaiole we want to get to Sicily for our final week.

What is your departure city, and what is the last city on the tour? Perhaps it would make more sense to go from Southern Italy to Sicily and then to Orvieto?

We arrive in Rome for the RS Southern Italy tour and we are departing from Rome as well. We originally planned to go to Sicily first, but were only able to get the Cretaiole reservation for the earlier week. So our itinerary at this point is the tour, 2 days in Orvieto, 1 week at Cretaiole, travel to Sicily (perhaps a flight will be the most efficient?) for 7 nights before returning to Rome for departure.

I would definitely fly from Roma to Palermo or Catania, depending on what you want to see in Sicilia.

PM me if you need a recommendation for an excellent B and B in Orvieto. The Hertz office is very close to the funicular going up to Orvieto for pick up or drop off.
