2 day trip Pompeii and Sorrento

Taking quick trip after heart of Italy tour from Rome-Pompeii-overnight in Sorrento. Want to spend the next day wandering around someplace beautiful then take train back to Rome that night. Are we crazy to try to take a trip to Capri? Is there enough to see in Sorrento for a day?

As long as you can get back to Rome on the last train it really doesn't matter how crazy (or not) you are...if you want to see Capri then do it. My wife and daughter did a quick little afternoon jaunt over to Capri and really liked it. My son and me enjoyed the time in Sorrento swimming in the Mediterranean and lounging at our hotel's private ocean platform. Sorrento is a place to relax. Too bad you can't spend at least a couple of nights there.

No, you aren't crazy. Capri is beautiful but very touristy and expensive. You might consider going up the Amalfi Coast to Positano, Amalfi, and up to Ravello. Ravello has picturesque views over the Med from high elevation. Accessible by public bus, but if you can hire a car it is better.

Hi Lisa, I had wanted to take the scenic Chairlift ride up to Mounte Solero (called the Seggovia) in Anacapri, but we were too sick with colds to do it. It sounds a little scary, but well worth it for the view! You need to get to Capri first, then take a bus or funicular up to Anacapri. Also, I heard that Capitano Ago tours around the island are wonderful, I think around eight hours total. You get to stop in Capri for a few hours, and see the grottos, plus get lunch on the boat and also have a chance to swim. Or, you can get tours from Sorrento or Capri (check Rick's book for great suggestions, plus some of the hotels advertise tours). I think you will need to pick and choose, but above all please do not be in a rush. Italy is nicest when experienced in a relaxed way.
Note: If you go to Capri, don't miss the last boat back! Best wishes for a lovely trip! Ruth

Thanks for the info Ruth et all. I would like to take the chair lift in Capri and see the Blue Grotto. It looks t like there is a boat that will give you a tour around the island and stop at the Blue Grotto as well. I think swimming is out as it will be mid Oct. Not even sure if we should bring our suits. It looks like we can leave from Sorrento in the am, store out luggage in Capri as per RS's book. Spend the day there and take the ferry to Naples then catch the train to Rome that evening. I guess I was feeling like all of the running around may make for a stressful day. We fly back home the following am from Rome.
