2.5 days in Rome- best options?

We are coming to Rome from Florence in early June arriving late afternoon, then have two full days and a morning. Perhaps you can suggest? Here are questions:

Is there a classic evening in Rome activity akin to cruising the seine in Paris? Rooftop bars? Or something else?

Do you recommend tours v DIY exploring? Like everyone else we want to see Ancient Rome and Vatican City! If a tour which do you suggest?

Are we really best off seeing the Trevi Fountain at 6 am and st Peter’s at opening? Is it worth the money for the “first tour of the day” tix?

I’d love to see opera or some other classical musical event in Rome; any suggestions for a special experience?

Thanks so much!!

Do RS Heart of Rome walk in the evening or in the morning
See Colosseum etc in one day
Vatican in the other

A food tour is a fun thing to do in the evening as well

You must pre book your timed entries
There are many many threads here with info on how and where to get tickets
A search will bring them up

The Trevi fountain is at it most alluring at night. Do Ostia Antica. OA is a must as it is the real Pompei. RS considers it the most underrated sight in the entire country.

Ostia Antica is great BUT if it's your first time in Rome, I'd stick with the Colosseum/Forum one day and Vatican the next. If you get a guided tour of the Vatican that ALSO includes St Peters they will take you through the connecting passage and you'll save lots of time. Enjoy it - it's going to be amazing v

Is the morning the day you have to go to the airport? If so, depending on the time of your flight, you won't have time to do much that day.

Actually our plan is to fly into Rome but go directly to Florence by train for four nights… train it to Rome to arrive late afternoon on the fifth day… spend that evening plus two full days in Rome… the we get onto a cruise ship in the afternoon of the 8th day.

At the risk of contradicting others, please consider taking a look at some of the less popular sites. With only two full days if you spend one at the Colliseum and forum, and the other at the Vatican it will be very crowded. It is so tempting to see the "must sees', but then I hear that people did not enjoy Rome do to the crowds. Personally I think that there are so many beautiful ( almost empty) churches in Rome that the Vatican can maybe be left for your next visit.

Having said that, I understand the draw, and if you do go then yes, get there at opening. We wandered over at around 4:30 pm last April, and the line up to get through security was over an hour. It will be busier I suspect in June. For the Colliseum, I believe you have to have a ticket ahead of time.
