2 1/2 months in Italy? Villages via train?

Hello
In mid-2023, I want to spend 2 1/2 months in Italy.....Not my first time to Italy and I have seen the major sites during my Rick Steves tours over the years.

1) Seeking ideas for 2 1/2 months in Italy, summer, starting in south traveling north.

2) Looking small villages to hop off-on the train -- not renting a car.

3) Will spend one week in each village (maybe using airbnb?)

4) Headed to Sesto Calende, Italy where my grandmother was born and hope to find some relatives there

5) one last piece of information....Traveling with my 3 year trained dog (11 pounds)

Thank you in advance and I look forward to all the wonderful ideas which are provided on this forum.

With kind regards,
Roca

It would be helpful to state where you have visited before and if you have any desire to return to any of those places or would rather visit totally different areas.

Also, what are your interests? Cultural (i.e., museums, art), food, beautiful vistas?
Since you have been to Italy before, you must realize that it is seldom, if ever, possible to hop off/on a train in a small town...small Italian towns rarely have train service. You may be better off looking at train service to larger towns that then have bus service to the towns you decide to visit.
Take a look at the train routes on these sites...
