1st time renting apartment in Rome--please help

Hello,
My husband and I will be in Rome for 5 nights, end of April--beg May, and are looking to rent an apartment. We are in our late 50's, like to walk and would like to be in the historic center, preferably a somewhat quiet neighborhood. I believe I have narrowed the neighborhood down to the Pantheon area, but am open to suggestions. I have looked at many of the suggested websites, and many apartments and am totally overwhelmed. One bedroom, kitchen area with table, washing machine would be nice, doesn't have to be big. When I look at reviews, some seem quite old or only positive ones shown. Any help to narrow this down, or specific apartment suggestions, would be appreciated!

I don't know that I'd call the pantheon a quiet neighborhood but it is certainly a good place for an apartment. I can't help you with a specific apartment but if you visit venere.com you will find up to date reviews by people who have completed a stay. You cannot write a review on that site until your stay is verified.

When I have questions about Rome, I go to RonInRome.com. He covers accommodations in detail.

We were nervous renting our first apartment in Rome, but luckily ended up here:

The apartment was great as were the owners. There are actually 2 apartments: 1 larger and 1 smaller and we stayed in the smaller. I can 100% recommend them.

Thanks for the suggestions. Will check these sites and hopefully get things narrowed down!

This is not in a quiet area, but inside the apartment is quiet. And the location is wonderful. You are 5 minutes or less from the Pantheon, Campo de Fiori, the tram to Trastevere and right next to a big transportation hub. There are many great restaurants in the area, also. I loved the week we spent In the apartment.

I know it can be a challenge to settle on a place and believe you will get what you expect. It is an act of faith.

A few years ago we stayed in VRBO 349428. It is between Largo Argentina and Campo dei Fiori, close to tram and bus, less than 10 minutes walk to the Pantheon. Lovely owners spoke English and live in the same building.

There are so many out there! If you find some you want to run by someone who knows the city, feel free to PM me with the links.

I went through this exercise earlier this year for a May 2015 trip. We ended up in a nice 2 bedroom / 2 bath apartment in Trastavere. Since you have your desired location narrowed down (and it's a great location!), my only advice would be to look at properties with multiple reviews and that are highly rated. Read the reviews and the list of amenities and go from there. Most properties will be quiet on the inside. Do you need an elevator? Do you need air conditioning? Good luck!

We will be staying in three different apartments on our upcoming trip, we used a combination of VRBO, AirBNB and a private rental agency. The process is time consuming with all the due diligence that is required, but in the end it is very rewarding. For Rome I used VRBO, once I found a few places I just put the VRBO number into google to search and came up with the Slowtravel website that contained many positive reviews (full write ups on the good and bad) for the property we chose (these reviews sealed the deal for us!). We will be staying in Monti in a studio for a price that fit our budget and is close to most sites. All communication has been prompt and professional and they even arraigned a car service to pick us up from the airport. Plus I just get a good feeling from the whole deal and I can tell you just from emails exchanged with others it just did not feel right.

Thank you to all that have responded. I feel better equipped to handle this task. Luckily, our trip is still a ways off. Not sure what I would have done if I had needed to make a decision quickly!

We are using worldwide-accom.com for our next visit in April '16. We have never used them before but a relative has and was extremely satisfied. We will be 6 adults and finding a reputable service and a decent apartment was a bit of a challenge. Have used VRBO, OwnersDirect, and Venere in the past with quite reasonable results. Those trips were with either 2 or 3 adults.
We much prefer renting apartments to hotel stays. Both have advantages and disadvantages but apartments usually are cheaper and often have washing machines.
