What is the best way to get to Varenna from Milan? Is is best to take the ferry or drive around the lake?

The easiest way is by train from Milano Centrale to Varenna. The trip by regional train takes just over an hour. Fare is about 5Euro. However, it sounds like you might have a car.

No question on this,the train.RS guidebk gives the details. It is a cinch to take. However the train does not stop long so better ready to get off at Varenna station with luggage in hand. Almost left my friend behind as she was delayed in grabbing her luggage.

We were in Varenna a few days back and went crazy trying to rent a car or moped. it is practically impossible. The more people we spoke to in Lake Como said it is simply not worth the effort to drive around the lake as the ferry systems are so efficient. Their is one place in Bellagio that rents SMART cars but they are not cheap. Train is the best way to go from Milan to Varenna. Sit on the left side of the train as you arrive in Varenna, you can feast on some wonderful lake views. Enjoy!!!
