Parking outside of Rome

We will be in Rome for a week in November. Is there a safe place to park our car cheaply and leave it, or is there a safe place to park our car outside of Rome and Train in? We do not want to drive while in Rome.

I'm wondering how expensive it will be to pay for your car rental for one week while you're not using it. Can you turn it in before you get to Rome, say at the FCO airport, and then rent another car if you need one after Rome?

Drive into Rome and drop off your bags and people.
then head out of town and park close to the train lines (airport line is nice). We just parked in the city for 4 days with no problems, as it seems the new Mayor of Rome is big on FREE PARKING.

This is great information and FREE!! Could you give even more information of where that location would be..."airport line"? Are you speaking of a location close to the main train terminal? Thanks, if you can reply.

We left our car in Orvieto and took the train into Rome. There is a large free parking lot at the train station. However, a week is a long time and I don't know if there is a time limit to park in this area. (Maybe somebody else knows) We are returning in October and plan on leaving our car here for three nights. By parking so far north, you avoid the heavy traffic areas that surround such a large city.
