Rome Hotel

I need a good suggestion for a somewhat inexpensive but nice hotel that is centrally located in Rome... any ideas?

Hi Jeff-
Our family of four stayed at the Hotel Aberdeen in Rome two summers ago -it was great. Great location, very clean and comfortable. Good breakfast and best part, it was air conditioned! Lovely in the summer

In addition to websites such as Travelocity, Expedia, etc...try
www.gtahotels.com

We booked a room with Hotel Palladium Palace, and have stayed there before.
It's a four star, but we got it for $166 per nite for two adults including breakfast & all taxes.

There are plenty of other hotels in this area which is just a stone's throw from the Roma Termini train station, and that website has a spotting map to show where they are.

We just got back from a stay at Hotel Aberdeen. It was nice but watch out for the family rooms (I'd read the same on www.tripadvisor.com). Some are next to the breakfast room and you'll be awaken at 6:30am to more chair scaping and cup rattling than you can believe. We choose the location as we wanted easy access to the airport & central train station (went to Ostia Antica- wonderful) which it supplies. Its rates and front desk are good and neighborhood fine but be prepare for considerable walking or taxis. Free internet was great and beds fine.

Hotel Smeraldo has a great location - between Campo dei Fiori and Largo Argentina. Easy stroll to Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona, Pantheon, and not that far to the Forum. Price was about 90 euro in the off-season ... not sure what high season rate is.

We also had a noisy room at the Aberdeen. The room, which was on a lower floor, overlooked a derelict lot and we got all the traffic noise from Via Nazionale. Twins beds were super narrow--like camp cots. Walls thin and plumbing noise from adjacent room was bothersome. This is not a favorite area and as another poster mentioned you will walk a long way to the major sights and better restaurants. A nice budget hotel that we really liked was Hotel Parlemento--it has a great location.

I also liked Hotel Italia but like Residence Adler better. They are in the same area a short walk from the RR station.

Jeff - Check out the Nicolas Inn on Via Cavour (5 min. walk to Colosseum and Forum. (www.nicolasinn.com). It's really a B&B, run by an American gal, Melissa, and her Italian husband, Francois. Super helpful innkeepers with no language barrier. We'd go back in a heartbeat!

In Rome, we are partial to the Hotel Navona - just off the Piazza Navona. Great rooms, great staff, great location. They do want payment in cash so you need to plan that. It used to be in Rick's book but hasn't been in the last couple. I haven't checked 2008 so it may be back.

Enjoy your trip!!!!

We also stayed at Hotel Adler but in their Bellesuite section as the other part was full. It is the same hotel, just rooms are on different floors (breakfast area is the same). It was a really nice room in a great location. Good breakfast.

Residenza Cellini is three blocks from the train station and around the corner from a metro station which was handy. Francesca was the main staff person there and she was very helpful and gracious. Breakfast was good and the room was lovely with an updated bathroom. Would stay there again.
