I am buying a 3 country pass for Germany, Italy and France. I am starting from Germany and want to go to Italy. If the train goes through Switzerland, do I have to pay extra? How can I find out the cost? What would be the best route for me to get from either Frankfurt or Munich to Rome? My last place before returning to Frankfurt (base) has to be Paris.
Thanks
eveny, one of the easiest routes from Germany to Italy is from Munich to Verona and then south to Rome. The Kufstein-Brennero section (a beautiful trip!) goes through Austria, so if your rail pass doesn't include that you'll have to buy a separate P-P ticket. I don't know the cost, but should be listed on either the bahn.de or the RailEurope web sites.
Cheers!
Thanks. So when I go to the bahn site - do I buy a p-p ticket from Munich to Verona, Verona to Rome or both?
You Germany and Italy passes will easily cover you to the borders of each country. It's the part over Switzerland or Austria that you will have to pay. I may be incorrect but if you show your pass when you buy your ticket in Germany, they will charge you the appropriate cost for the entire journey. The train crews do change on many international trains as they cross the border. The Swiss conductors will be certain to check your ticket.
Your pass will take you to the last German station and pick up again at the first Italian station. Your supplement will only be for the leg in between.
The one time I thought I would have to pay a supplement, I asked the conductor. It turned out Salzburg was covered on my German pass so I didn't end up paying extra.
