restaurant reservations

When Rick Steves says reservations are a smart idea, as a rule, just how far should I reserve?..day..2days? or can I make them the morning before we dine?

Suppose it depends where and when you are going. Was in Florence, Siena and Assisi in May and did book for dinner each night in Florence which was just as well as the restaurants we went to were fully booked. Didn't book in Siena and Assisi and had no problems getting into the restaurants we wanted to. We booked in the morning for that night but if you are going at a really busy time I'd suggest the day before at least. Your hotel will be happy to help you.

Doing it the day before is a good idea. And reserve for lunch, too. As the previous poster said, your hotel should be able to help you.
