18 days in Sardinia - proposed itinerary and opinions?

Hi. I'm planning a trip to Sardinia in September, and before I completely lock down my plans, I wanted to post my itinerary here and get feedback from those who have been there before. Our flights in and out are already locked down, and I have a list of things I want to see, but how I arrange my time has not been finalized yet (but I want to do that soon as our departure is looming).

We will have 18 days and 17 nights. We will start our trip in Amsterdam for a couple days to get over the US west coast-to-Europe jetlag, then we arrive in Olbia, Sardinia on a Sunday morning around 9 am. My plan is to hit the ground running, pick up our rental car at the airport and head out. Overall goal is to see as much of this large island (2nd biggest Island in the Mediterranean, after Sicily) at a fairly aggressive (but not totally insane) pace. We have been to Italy before, this will be out first trip to Sardinia. We are OK with a lot of driving, but my goal is not to spend all day in the car every day. The challenge as I see it is that Sardinia has too many great places to go and things to see, and one could easily spend a month there and not see it all. We have about 17-18 usable days so I am trying to stretch things enough to see as much as I can without ruining our experience.

What we like: Beautiful landscapes, beaches & rocky coastlines, castles, ruins, other piles of old rocks. Culture and history. Old world towns with narrow, winding streets and some remaining charm. Good food and wine. Swimming in clear, warm water. Spending time outdoors with a little hiking and walking.

Don't like: crass, crowded tourist traps, over-developed industrial commercialized tourist places, pretentiousness - I know there's more than a little of all that on Sardinia (alas, popularity...) but we're hoping to keep away from the worst of the boom-boom circuit and enjoy things while keeping at least a little physical & mental distance from the excesses of the most popular resort spots. I know this will involve some compromises.

Here's my tentative plan:

Day 1: Arrive Olbia 9 am, pick up rental car. Head out to the north, destination Palau and the ferry to La Maddalena, driving via Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda. I know the Costa Smeralda is beautiful, but also touristy, highly developed and highly expensive. I'm thinking that a few hours driving through will be enough since we will get plenty of beautiful coastline elsewhere. Take the ferry from Palau to La Maddalena in the afternoon, spend 2 nights on Isola Maddalena.

Day 2: Isola Maddalena.

Day 3: Ferry back to Palau, then drive eastward along the coast, stopping frequently as the scenery and our whims dictate (Satna Teresa, Isola Rossa), spend the night in Castelsardo.

Day 4: Continue west along the north coast, to Porto Torres, and on to Stntino (the peninsula at Sardinia's northwest tip), Sleep in Stintino or Porto Torres.

Day 5: Head south to Alghero. Spend 2 nights in Alghero.

Day 6: Alghero.

Day 7: Continue south along the coast to Bosa. Sleep Bosa or Bosa Marina.

Day 8: Continue south along the coast to Oristano. Sleep Oristano area.

Day 9: Continue south towards Portoscuso, on the SW coast. Ferry to Carloforte on Osola de San Pietro. Sleep Carloforte (2 nights).

Day 10: Carloforte.

Day 11: Ferry from Carloforte to Calasetta on Sant'Antioco. Continue east towards Cagliari, via Chia, Pula (around the southern tip of the island), sleep Cagliari (2 nights).

Day 12: Cagliari

Day 13: Continue eastward, round the SE corner of the island, and then north to Costa Rei. Sleep somewhere along Costa Rei (maybe Capo Ferrato).

Day 14: Continue north, sleep in Santa Maria Navaresse or Arbatax.

Day 15: Continue north, sleep in Cala Gonone (2 nights).

Day 16: Cala Gonone.

Day 17: Last full day on Sardinia. Continue north to somewhere just south of Olbia (Porto San Paolo, San Teodoro, Santa Lucia), sleep there.

(continued from above...)

Day 18: Drive to Olbia, drop car at airport. 3 pm flight departure. From there we're off to Prague for a few days before returning home.

Obviously, there's a lot of driving here, but as best I can tell, the driving distances are generally short (in most cases not more than a few hours), although I'm sure roads will be both twisty (slow) and full of scenery (lots of stops), and punctuated by places where we will want to spend some time.

There are some one-night-stands (7 of them to be precise) but more nights in two-night stands (5 groups of 2 nights), which I think is an OK mix given that many of the driving days will be short (although not all of them).

I'd welcome your thoughts on this proposed itinerary - any glaring items/places I've overlooked or not doing justice to? Am I dissing the Costa Smaralda because of its reputations for super-high prices, Belusconi's boom boom parties, Russian oligarchs and all? I know, beautiful scenery but I think we will get enough of that away from all the craziness. Or am I the crazy one?

Thanks for your candid feedback!

One thing you don't want to miss is Sardinia's world class wineries, which we found on both the North and West coast as we traveled from Cagliari up to Oblia and then back down through the center of the island.
Suggest you add many of them for stops as you drive from city to city however, be aware they and many restaurants close from 2 to 5 out in the country.

Thanks, Jerry. I've heard great things about Sardinian wine and am looking forward to extensive testing to validate those opinions. :)
Honestly, there's so much about Sardinia that sounds very appealing - including food and wine. I'm not sure we will be spending much time in the interior, as we're trying to drive all the way around the island, and will mostly stick to coastal areas. Did any of the wines/wine regions in particular stand out, any favorites to recommend?
Thanks!

OK, revised itinerary (version 1.1)....

  • Day 1: Arrive Olbia 9 am, pick up rental car. Head out to the north, destination Palau and the ferry to La Maddalena, driving via Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda. Take the ferry from Palau to La Maddalena in the afternoon, spend 2 nights on Isola Maddalena.
  • Day 2: Isola Maddalena.
  • Day 3: Ferry back to Palau, then drive eastward along the coast, stopping frequently as the scenery and our whims dictate (Santa Teresa, Isola Rossa, Castelsardo), on to Stintino. Sleep in Stintino.
  • Day 4: Head south to Alghero. Spend 2 nights in Alghero.
  • Day 5: Alghero.
  • Day 6: Continue south along the coast through Bosa and on to Oristano. Sleep Oristano area (2 nights).
  • Day 7: Oristano area (including Sinis Peninsula, Tharros).
  • Day 8: Continue south towards Portoscuso, on the SW coast. Ferry to Carloforte on Isola di San Pietro. Sleep Carloforte (2 nights).
  • Day 9: Carloforte.
  • Day 10: Ferry from Carloforte to Calasetta (on Sant'Antioco). Continue east towards Cagliari, via Chia, Pula (around the southern tip of the island), sleep Cagliari (2 nights).
  • Day 11: Cagliari.
  • Day 12: Continue eastward, round the SE corner of the island, and then north to Costa Rei. Sleep somewhere along Costa Rei (exact beach town TBD, maybe Capo Ferrato).
  • Day 13: Continue north, to Santa Maria Navaresse or Arbatax area (2 nights).
  • Day 14: Santa Maria Navaresse or Arbatax.
  • Day 15: Continue north, sleep in Cala Gonone (2 nights).
  • Day 16: Cala Gonone.
  • Day 17: Last full day on Sardinia. Continue north to somewhere just south of Olbia (Porto San Paolo, San Teodoro, Santa Lucia, exact town TBD), sleep there.
  • Day 18: Drive to Olbia, drop car at airport, fly away (3 pm flight)

This revision reduces the number of one-night-stands (down to just three) by stretching some drives (previously there were a lot of days that would be 1-2 hours driving, then stopping in a small town overnight). There are several days with drives estimated at 3-4 hours, but nothing longer than that (drive time estimates from viamichelin.com, and always rounded up generously to allow for inefficiencies and lots of stops).

Any of you Sardiniaphiles have any input? Opinions welcome - Thank you!!

I don't know many of the areas you are visiting, since I'm familiar only with the north, where I've been a few times.
Overall I say that you are covering a lot of real estate on a car. Sardinia is large, freeways are few, and travel times are much longer that it might seem looking at the map. From Olbia airport to Palau, although they look close on the map, can be easily 1-1.5 hours with summer traffic. If you make stops along the way on the Costa Smeralda, it's a half day affair.

I don't think you spend enough nights on the same place to truly enjoy it. Sardinia has gorgeous beaches, that is what people go there for. Some require a little driving from the main highway. So you need to stay 3 nights in each place to get to see things. You need also time for a boat excursion to the various islands of the Maddalena Archipelago National Park, a must which will take you all day (many boat companies provide that excursion). I took those excursions from Santa Teresa, which is a great base also to visit Bonifacio in Corsica (France), another must see. Capo Testa, next to Santa Teresa, has a wonderful lunar landscape beach called Cala Luna. I would stay a few nights in Santa Teresa and use it as as a base. Also consider that boat excursions don't operate with high winds, which the Bocche di Bonifacio are subject too.
Castelsardo is probably the prettiest village in the island. It can be visited from Santa Teresa, but it's at least one hour each way. Stintino is another great beach. Another hour+ further.

I would probably cut the island in half, drawing an imaginary line from Bosa to Arbatax, and concentrate on the northern half of the island, which is the best part. That will give you a chance to savor the trip more by staying more than 2 nights in each stop and therefore enjoy the beaches more. I wouldn't cram the whole island in your trip. Otherwise the only memory you will have is of being on a curvy strip of asphalt every single day.
