We will be in Italy May 2-18 2010. Thought we would spend some time in Rome,&Positano. We will be traveling by train. Any thoughts?

get a couple of guidebooks and read thru them, see what interests you in areas you might visit. Watch TV shows such as Rick Steves or Samantha Brown, see what catches your eye about other nearby areas.

Judy- am planning another Itlay trip for May 2010 as well. If you are flying into Milan out of Rome here is a couple of suggestions.-
Train to Venice - 2 days
Train to Florence- 3 full days - 1 day Siena
Train to Naples - 1 day travel ferry over to Sorrento or Train
Sorrento 2 days - side trip to Capri
Positano 2 days- get there by bus or ferry
Ferry back to Sorrento and then train to Rome 1 day travel
Rome 3 days
I agree with Doug to buy RS book or others and read where you would like to go.
