Best way to get from Rome to Montalcino?

Hello all --

I need to get from Rome to Montalcino this coming Saturday (yay!). Problem is, I can't figure out if the train or bus is better. I'll be traveling with a friend and a decent amount of luggage. I was told that the bus is a quicker route than the train as the train has a least three stops before Siena (closest railway station). Does anyone have a suggestion? This is my first time in Italy.

Thanks much, Dana

Dana,
It sounds like you have received bad information.

To start you really need a car for Montalcino. The closest train station is Buonconvento but it is a very small station and hard to get to.

To get to Siena the train http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html only reqires one stop at Chiusi where you change trains. The bus http://www.sena.it/ goes from Rome to Siena. Both bus and train take about 3 hours. At Siena you will need to catch a bus to Montalcino http://www.trainspa.it/EXTRAURBANO.htm
There are no taxi in Montalcino but you can hire a private driver http://www.montalcinotravel.com/intro_eng.htm

Thank you, Henry! We are meeting friends in Montalcino and they will have a car. Sounds like the bus to Siena, then another to Montalcino is the best option. I appreciate the help!
