Well, my experience is from 27 years ago (post college graduation European trip), so I'm not sure how relevant it is. And, we went from Brindisi, not Bari. But, here goes ...
We did both this route both directions. And, each time, we stopped over on the Island of Corfu for a night. Corfu is gorgeous, and it really helps break up the loooong trip. We rented mopeds to explore the island.
We splurged for a cabin on the overnight legs. Once we hit Patras, we immediately took the train to Athens and spent a few days there.
I would definitely recommend the trip, but it does chew up a bit of travel time. But, if you have time to really enjoy it, it's wonderful.
