Cameras

Quick question - I have a digital camera with a strap attached to it that is large enough to fit around my wrist. Any other precautions I should take to prevent theft yet have it available for a picture at a moments notice? I kind of hate the idea of having a camera hang from my hand the whole time. I have heard stories of men snatching things out of your hands or cutting straps off your shoulders to grab valuable things. Thanks!

I changed the wrist strap for a neck strap I had from another product. It's a pocket size camera, so I just stick it under my jacket or shirt when I'm not taking pictures. It's out of harms way and my hands are free. That's the main reason I use a money belt vs a neck pouch, my neck's occupied.

Oh, Please...dont' worry! I've take my digital camera several times to Europe/Italy, had it across my shoulder/chest with a strap and never had an issue.
When I travel on the Metro or Subway, I put my camera away in my shoulder bag.

The idea of someone coming up to steal your camera by cutting the strap is pretty far fetched....not to say that it hasn't happened to some reader here, but I don't remember the last time I've saw a post like that.

Can you say "urban legend"?

As always, if you take precautions, you will be fine. Everyone else is around you taking pictures too...the potential thieves have lots to choose from!

I kept my Cannon Elph Digital camera in my shoulder bag purse and put the strap over my head and not just on my shoulder. I held it tighter to my body in crowds an around the train station. Don't leave it laying on the floor or table. My sister left hers on the table while having dinner when she was on a tour a few years ago in Italy. When she turned around her camera was gone. I kept my camera inside one of the zipper compartments where it was easy to reach. My husband had a case that looped onto his belt and had no trouble with his camera. I used our new camera and he used our older one. We took both because we both did different things during many of the days.

I always put my camera back in my inside large pocket of my coat. I never carry it in a bag. When I take pictures I put my hand thru the little strap the camera originally came with.

I took my Cannon A80 with me last May and the ring that holds the wrist strap broke off on the second day! I had to carefully pull it out of it's case and hold it tight for the rest of the 2 week trip. I now have a newer camera and keep it in a slightly bigger case that I wear crossed over my body that will allow me to take the camera out more easily.

In my 2 trips to Italy last year, I did not encounter any problems with attempts at taking things away from me.
