Can you get from Rome to Pompeii and back in one day and if so how? Thank you.

Yep!!! By train, one change. But it makes for a very long day.
Take a train to Naples and the local commuter line, Circumvesuviana, to the Pompeii stop and walk 30 feet to the ticket office. Just reverse going back.

Yes. I and many others here have done it.
Train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale (at least one high speed Freccia train per hour)=70 min.
Circumvesuviana Commuter train (destination Sorrento) from Napoli Centrale to Pompei-Villa dei Misteri=40 min.
Walk from Pompei Circumvesuviana station to Excavation site=5 min.
Total travel about 2+ hours.
Do the opposite to return to Rome. The last high speed train back to Rome departs from Napoli Centrale at 7:30pm, therefore you should leave Pompeii shortly after 6pm at the latest.
