14 July is the festino of the patron saint of Palermo, St Rosalia, and it is often the most momentous day of the celebratory calendar in the city.

She specializes in providing protection from plagues, and after she posthumously saved Palermo from one in 1624, and her accomplishments were spread by Jesuits and the painter Anthony van Dyck, devotion to her went through the roof, all over Christendom.
