14 days in Italy - Please help us plan an itinerary :)

There are 8 ladies traveling to Italy, most for the first time to Italy, but we all are only meeting in Matera for 3-4 days for a friend’s birthday party (60th). My friend and I want to add some time before and after the 3-4 days in Matera and need suggestions. I have never been to Italy, but will return next year for my honeymoon. My friend has been to Rome so it is not high on the list. I do think that I want to reserve Venice for my honeymoon. ;)

Please share your suggestions and favorite spots. We are building an itinerary now and need to purchase flights still. Feeling a little overwhelmed. Oh, the 3-4 days in Matera are June 9-12, 2024. Much appreciation!

Hi mermaid: You don't mention where you are flying into or out of and that information would be very helpful. if you arrive in the south and leave from the south (e.g. Naples) then, since you will have only 3-4 days before and after Matera, I suggest that you remain in the south. Consider visiting Salerno or Sorento which can include a day trip to the Amalfi Coast towns or alternatively to Pompeii/Herculaneum. Or you can consider the southeastern coast, e.g. Bari area. With the brief period of time you have, you should limit the time spent traveling.
I believe if you will add your likely arrival and departure city you will receive more advice from other forum members.
Good luck and enjoy your visit.

Matera is down into the boot of Italy and a bit far from the BIG 3, Rome, Florence and Venice. Still, you could take in the Naples area, suggest staying in Sorrento. Visit Pompeii, Capri, Naples museums and the Amalfi Coast. Five days could do it for that area.

We don’t have our flights yet. What are your thoughts the flying into Naples in 6/1 and spending 6 days exploring Amari Coast, 4 days in Matera, then the rest of the time exploring the Puglia area and flying out of Bari. I agree, we don’t want to spend a lot of time checking in and out of hotels/AirBnb’s. Really the skies the limit so open to suggestions. I really appreciate everyone’s help! Thank you!
